BETHESDA SOFTWORKS NORTHERN
NATIONALS ELIMINATION ROUNDS REPORT
US 131 Motorsports Park (Martin, Mich.)
Race Date: August 10, 2003
Charles Carpenter, owner/driver 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air (Pro Modified class,
nitrous)
Hometown: Harrisburg, N.C.
Notes:
- In a late night brainstorm session with crew chief Ken Hively, Charles
Carpenter decided to revert back to the familiar two-disk clutch that he had
been using his entire racing career. Yesterday, Carpenter experimented with a
three-disk system during the qualifying rounds.
- Carpenter paired up against the number one qualifier, Mike Janis, in the
first round. Though he had a faster reaction time, Carpenter shook the tires and
had to shut down prematurely.
Round-by-Round Results:
Round 1 (RT/ET/MPH):
(W) Mike Janis (0.130/6.281/228.85)
(L) Charles Carpenter (0.080/13.398/72.21)
Charles Carpenter Quote:
"The track was tight and 30 feet out I shook the tires. I cut a good light
but threw it away. We set up the clutch too aggressive today. It is all in the
clutch -- it is always critical and you always need either more clutch or less
clutch. I like the three-disc clutch, I think. But I need to get some runs on
it. It was crazy to come in here with the three-disc and not have done any
testing runs on the setup, but we failed to qualify for the last couple of races
we needed to do something drastic. It may have been a mistake to go back to the
two-disc setup, but it is always easy to second guess yourself."
