SUNOCO WORLD NATIONALS QUALIFYING
REPORT
Norwalk Raceway Park (Norwalk, Ohio)
Qualifying Dates: August 22-23, 2003
Charles Carpenter, owner/driver 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air (Pro Modified class,
nitrous)
Hometown: Harrisburg, N.C.
Fastest Qualifying Run: 6.377 seconds (Qualifying Session
4, Saturday)
Top Qualifying Speed: 222.55 mph (Qualifying Session 4, Saturday)
Qualifying Position: 24th
Notes:
- Despite a solid first round run which placed him fifth in the field,
Carpenter slipped down the time sheet and missed the final elimination field of
16 cars.
- Carpenter was able to make just two clean passes out of the four
qualifying runs, his first run on Friday and the final run Saturday. He
experienced tire shake on the other two attempts, a problem that has plagued him
at nearly every event this season.
Charles Carpenter Quote:
"It’s really frustrating to miss the cut, but if you look at the time sheet
there are a lot of heavy hitters that are also going home early. Mike Janis, who
just won a race, and Shannon Jenkins (the 2002 IHRA Pro Modified Champion) both
missed the field.
"On my first run I had a fresh cut clutch (meaning it had no wear) and I was
on the verge of not making it down the track. Once again I seem to have missed
the elusive clutch setup for my ’55 Chevrolet. We made a gear change in the
transmission for the final run and that was a good move as it produced the best
pass of the weekend for us. We are getting the data that we need on this three
disc clutch so at least we can feel positive about taking some steps forward,
even if they are not in the elimination rounds."
