PRESIDENT'S CUP NATIONALS
ELIMINATION ROUNDS REPORT
Maryland International Raceway (Budds Creek, Md.)
Race Date: August 10, 2003
Charles Carpenter, owner/driver 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air (Pro Modified class,
nitrous)
Hometown: Harrisburg, N.C.
Notes:
- Carpenter paired up against the second fastest qualifier, Steve Castellana,
in the first round. Near the 330-foot mark Carpenter shook the tires and had to
shut down coasting across the finish line.
- Not convinced that he missed the setup, Carpenter plans to run a Quick 8
race on October 4 at Farmington, N.C. He intends to unload, add fuel and run
with exactly the same setup that the team had today on his ’55 Chevrolet.
Round-by-Round Results:
Round 1 (RT/ET/MPH):
(W) Steve Castellana (0.058/6.459/187.99)
(L) Charles Carpenter (0.158/10.119/86.93)
Charles Carpenter Quote:
"Can’t explain it. Don’t know why we could make four solid runs without any
tire shake and then today it comes back to bite us. We didn’t make a single
change between last night and today -- even the conditions were pretty similar,
though it is a bit cooler today. I thought the setup looked right. Maybe it was
just the air being cooler that made the difference.
"It’s discouraging when you look at the results of the race. Steve (Castellana)
had some problems out there and was ready to be knocked off. All I needed to do
was run the times I had done during qualifying and we would have been in the
second round."
